What coverage does an adventure business need?
Participant & Program Protection
- Participant Accident (medical payments): Secondary medical benefits for injuries during activities, camps, or classes.
- Participant Legal Liability (PLL): Helps defend and settle claims alleging participant injury due to your operations, instruction, or supervision.
- Abuse/Molestation coverage: Critical where minors are present; requires prevention protocols (background checks, training, reporting).
Operations & Premises
- General Liability (GL): Bodily injury / property damage to guests, spectators, and third parties.
- Umbrella/Excess Liability: Higher limits for catastrophic events or venue/landowner requirements.
- Event Liability: If you host off‑site events; venues often require Additional Insured, Primary & Non‑Contributory, and Waiver of Subrogation wording on COIs.
Equipment & Property
- Commercial Property: Buildings, structures, fixtures, signage, concessions, and tenant improvements.
- Inland Marine / Equipment Floater: Mobile and specialized gear (harnesses, helmets, ATVs, inflatables, rental fleets, portable obstacles).
- Rented-to-Others coverage: Protects your gear while in a participant’s possession (with proper contracts/waivers).
- Equipment Breakdown: Mechanical/electrical failure of pumps, compressors, lifts, zip lines, refrigeration.
Weather & Downtime
- Business Income & Extra Expense: Replace lost revenue and fund temporary fixes when a covered physical loss (e.g., wind, fire) shuts you down.
- Adverse Weather / Non‑appearance endorsements: Useful for ticketed events and live shows (availability varies).
- Flood / Earthquake / Named Storm: Often excluded on standard property—write separate or add by endorsement.
Vehicles & Transport
- Commercial Auto: Owned vehicles for transport or maintenance.
- Hired & Non‑Owned Auto (HNOA): Staff using personal or rented vehicles on business.
Workforce & Data
- Workers Compensation: Employee injuries (including instructors and marshals).
- Employment Practices Liability (EPLI): Harassment, discrimination, wrongful termination claims.
- Cyber Liability: Online ticketing, waivers, and participant data (privacy, ransomware, regulatory response).
- Crime/Social Engineering: Protection against fund diversion and payment fraud.
If you rent out equipment (ATVs, kayaks, bikes, boards)
- Use Inland Marine with rented‑to‑others and borrowed equipment endorsements.
- Require written waivers, ID checks, and pre/post‑rental condition reports.
